NAS and the National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Association sought nominations (see Networker, Nov. 1996) for individuals
who significantly contributed to national wildlife refuges through volunteerism and dedicated staff work to receive awards in three categories.
The Results
- 1997 Volunteer-of-the-Year Award, to Bill Buchanan (Springfield, Pa.), for his work at the John Heinz NWR at Tinicum in Pennsylvania (brought Tinicum to the regional public's eye through reporting and photography);
- 1997 Volunteer-of-the-Year Award, to Judy Dryja (Rockledge, Fl.), for her work at Meritt Island NWR, Florida (interpretive assistance to visitors; developed backyard bird habitat programs; drew public into Christmas Bird Counts on the island);
- 1997 Employee-of-the-Year Award, to Jack Jeffrey, Wildlife Biologist at Hakalau NWR/Hawaii (conservation efforts throughout the islands; good use of volunteers; public outreach through vibrant nature photography);
- Paul Kroegel Award (Refuge Manager Award), to Lou Hinds, Refuge Manager at Ding Darling NWR, Sanibel Island, Florida (developed successful public outreach programs; contributor to host of local and regional conservation initiatives; also see AUDUBON magazine, May-June '96).
Audubon launched its NWR System Campaign last year to build public awareness and appreciation for the System. As part of the Campaign, NAS developed the Audubon Refuge Keepers (ARK) program, designed to build citizen support groups in connection with local wildlife refuges. The accomplishments of the 1997 Refuge Award winners serve as models for the expanding network of ARK groups.
