First Annual Belize Bird-Fest '98

from Rudi Bergos

The Belize Audubon Society (Central America) will be holding "Belize Bird-fest '98" (BBI-'98), October 2-8, 1998. This is to highlight our country's extremely diverse natural history, specifically our avi-fauna. October is just at the time of the north-to-south bird migrations of the Americas, and BBI '98 participants can expect to see an even greater variety of birds than at other times. During our Bird Festival, we will look for birds everywhere -- in our waterways, our jungles, near caves and waterfalls, near Maya ruins under forest canopies, and of course, also on the little islands (cayes) that dot the longest barrier reef in America. Long before saving the environment was in fashion, Belize, one of four English-speaking countries of the Americas, was already accepting visitors to come and enjoy our birds. Of the approximately 540 species of birds listed officially, birders on guided tours regularly return with lists exceeding 100 species seen on any given day.
