Independence from "Stuff"

from Debbie Fisher

Loss of wildlife habitat is tied directly to our human population's demands on the environment for natural resources. Audubon chapter leaders Bob Cohen, Boulder County AS (CO), Debbie Fisher, Rainier AS (Kent, WA); Liz Woedel, Oxford AS (OH), and other Auduboners across the country are exploring these issues, implementing changes into their own lives, developing and presenting workshops, and working to promote chapter and public awareness about "living well with less".

The materials from the "Live Well With Less" workshop at the July NAS Convention, given by the three chapter leaders noted above, are available to chapter members for the cost of postage. Practical ideas on how we can make changes in our lives to minimize our impacts on the environment are covered, along with tools to help people make these changes. Materials and a resource list are also on the Web: http://www.audubon.org/chapter/wa/rainier/livewell.html.

An additional tool for chapter and public education on these issues is a set of films being promoted by PBS television. To help put perspective on the problem and to offer solutions, PBS stations across the country aired the following two TV programs: Affluenza on Thursday, July 2nd and Escape from Affluenza on Tuesday, July 7th (check local PBS listings or the Affluenza Web site, below, or call local stations, for exact air times).

What You Can Do

  • Request the NAS Convention "Live Well with Less" workshop materials
  • Join the NAS Population and Habitat Campaign. Their latest no-cost handbook, "Population and Habitat in the New Millennium," draws connections between population growth, resource consumption and environmental issues in a clear and balanced way. You can receive the free handbook, along with the Population & Habitat Campaign's free bi-monthly newsletter, by calling 303/442-2600, or e-mail: population@audubon.org. Visit the Campaign's Web site at http://www.earthnet.net/~popnet/.
  • Tune into the PBS shows; alert others to their air dates and times. If you missed "Affluenza" and "Escape from Affluenza," contact your local PBS station to ask them to re-broadcast.
  • Request a videotape, along with viewers' and teachers' guides, through the link to the PBS Affluenza Web site (see below)
