QUESTION:
What should the local chapters be charging for Audubon membership, new and renewals? I know what we charge but I have not been able to get National to tell me if we are correct. Why is this so difficult?
-- Phil Teter, Tulsa Audubon Society
ANSWER:
Introductory membership rates are $20, with $15 per year for seniors (62 and over) and full-time students. At no cost to the chapter, National Audubon Society will send membership brochures (with a picture of a puffin on the front) that offer an introductory membership at $20, with a free backpack. So long as chapters fill in the Chapter Code on the membership form, they will receive the full $15 chapter dues share on any memberships generated with that brochure, with no charge for the backpack. If you would like to receive copies of the membership brochure, please contact Iris Blumenthal in the Membership Department at iblumenthal@audubon.org or by phone at 800/935-2473.
In general, the Membership Department recommends that chapters not worry about handling any renewals through newsletters or other brochures. The basic membership rate is $35 per year and while there are no additional formal categories of membership, we rely upon the generosity of our members as it is their support that funds our programs and projects. Allowing members to respond to the renewal reminders sent by the Membership Department prevents duplicate memberships. The Membership Department also renews at appropriate rates, asking members to gradually increase their level of support as they renew year after year - to a maximum, at this time, of $40 -- while all along inviting members to support Audubon further by making additional contributions.
Please send your questions about chapter-related issues to chapter_services @audubon.org or to the Chapter Services Office.
