Friends of Hog Island -- Update
The first annual meeting of the Friends of Hog Island (FOHI) will be held on July 8 at the Audubon Camp in Bremen, ME. The group formed in July of 1998; the Executive Board met 3 times during the winter. The mission of FOHI is to preserve of the Audubon Camp of Maine and to support and enhance its educational goals. They plan a quarterly newsletter and hope to enlist financial support from former campers and staff and others interested in the mission. The July meeting will implement a fund-raising drive for a new boat, scholarship aid for campers, and long-needed repairs and improvement of the island property.

Chapter Receives Stewardship Award for New Sanctuary
Through a generous donation from the Fischer family, Orleans Audubon Society (OAS) is now a landowner and manager of a sanctuary, for the first time in its 50-year history. The new, 86.5-acre, OAS-Fischer Sanctuary, is a bald cypress and water tupelo-swamp forest along the Morgan River, near Slidell, about 35 miles northeast of downtown New Orleans. On April 30,1999, The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana awarded the Orleans Audubon Society its 1999 Coastal Stewardship Award for the creation of this sanctuary, which protects valuable wetland systems.
