In Memoriam

Elvis Stahr, who served as NAS President from 1968-1979, and as NAS Senior Counselor from 1979-1981, passed away at the age of 82 on November 11, 1998, at his home in Greenwich, CT. Our Chairman of the Board Donal O'Brien said of Mr. Stahr, "With boundless zeal and determination, Elvis set a high standard for what a conservationist should be...". In reflecting on the life and work of Mr. Stahr, NAS President John Flicker observed that "...Stahr fought hard for the environment, winning battles on behalf of Kentucky's Red River Gorge, the Florida Everglades, the Outer Banks of NC, and the great whales. Under his leadership, the Audubon Society grew from only 88,000 members to more than 388,000. Stahr added thousands of acres to the society's system of bird sanctuaries. Elvis Stahr was an inspiration to all who knew him...".

Donations may be made in Elvis Stahr's memory to NAS, or to Indiana University Foundation, POBox 500; Bloomington, IA 47402.
