Education/Resource Management Internship


Position: Numerous temporary, full-time positions.

Pay: Interns are housed in a furnished cabin with private bedroom and shared kitchen, bath, and living areas. The salary is the Florida state minimum wage.

College credit: Students should arrange for school credit with their advisors beforehand.

Dates: Dates are flexible; however, preference will be given to those applicants able to commit to the desired time frames below.

Location: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples, Florida. Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is an exceptional environmental education center located in Southwest Florida. This 12,000-acre wilderness contains the largest remaining stand of subtropical bald cypress in North America. The Sanctuary is also home to one of the largest breeding colonies of endangered Wood Storks

Qualifications: Some college level course work in environmental studies, biology, resource management, education, or a related field. Teaching experience and/or knowledge of curriculum development is helpful. A strong natural history background, excellent communication skills, flexibility, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn are required.

Physical and mental requirements: Must be physically fit. Internships involve frequent travel on foot over rough, mucky flooded areas; exertion from lifting and carrying equipment; and, field days battling heat and insects can be physically tiring.

Essential duties: Interns are involved in all aspects of the operation of the Nature Center. Primary duties include conducting and developing environmental education programs for students and adults and assisting with resource management (exotic plant control, prescribed burning, water management). Other duties include Sanctuary maintenance and visitor center operations. Interns must complete an independent project around a chosen field or interest.

Relationships, external: visitors/guests on the Sanctuary boardwalk and center.
