Educational Demonstrations and Workshops

First Saturday of every month from 9-11 AM

Saturday, June 6 - Bird Banding Demonstration (MAPS). Drop by and watch birds being netted, weighed, identified, tagged and released. A great opportunity to see a bird up close and observe the wonders of life on the wing. Leader: Carlie Henneman. RSVP. Email

Saturday, July 4 - Southern Pacific Pond Turtle Project. Learn about the Southern Pacific Pond Turtle headstart project and see live turtles. Leader: Darrell Barnes. RSVP. Email

Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Kern Valley Hummingbird Celebration. Kern River Preserve HQ, Weldon. 

Saturday, September 5 - Landscape Photography. Jim will demonstrate the basics, go over some tricks for capturing better images. Bring your camera (digital or print). Leader: Jim Steele. RSVP. Email

Saturday, October 3 - Falconry Demonstration. Learn about the ancient art of falconry and see a live goshawk in action. Leader: Bill Foster. RSVP. Email

Saturday, November 7 - Animal tracks with Wendy Rannals. Investigate the many signs left by wandering animals including footprints, scrapes and other clues. RSVP. Email

Saturday, December 5 - Cattle Ranching History. Family ranching history with Erik Hafenfeld. Learn about the life and history of local ranching families. RSVP. Email

Dress for the weather including a hat, long sleeves, shoes, and or a coat. All activities will be outdoors so, don’t forget water, sunscreen and bug spray. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the preserve after the program if you like. There are picnic tables and port-a-potties. NOTE: The preserve is a pack in/pack out facility. There is no potable water or garbage facilities available.

Directions: the entrance to Audubon- California’s Kern River Preserve is at 18747 Hwy 178 between Weldon and Onyx, 1.1 miles east of the T-intersection with Sierra Way. There is a large sign at the entrance. Drive slowly down the dirt entrance road as cattle are frequently in the field. The first 0.2 mi is an easement and not part of the preserve, please respect the landowner and do not stop or park until you reach the parking area inside the preserve.
