Meet the 2009 Summer Camp Staff

Wendy Miller, Summer Camp Director

Wendy is the Education Program Manager at Audubon Sharon and has been the Summer Camp Director for the past four years. She handles all camp registrations, supervises the camp staff, and oversees the entire summer camp program.  Wendy fell in love with nature and being outdoors when she attended a summer nature camp when she was a kid. Now, she enjoys helping kids share in those same experiences at Audubon camp!

Kim Miedema, Camp Counselor

Kim came to Audubon Sharon in February 2008 as an Education Intern.  She was a Summer Camp Counselor in 2009 and after that, she was kept on staff as a temporary Naturalist, helping to teach numerous school programs both onsite and in the schools.  Kim taught many sessions for the older students last summer and is looking forward to working with some of our younger campers this year. Kim will be teaching the following camp sessions: Early Childhood Discovery, Aquatic Adventures (June 22-26), Those Things with Wings, Nature Detectives, Animal Caretakers, Crunch Munch & Animal Boogie.

Alex Navarro, Camp Counselor

Alex is the newest member of the Audubon Sharon family and will be joining us the last week in May.  He is currently working as a camp counselor in South Carolina and has been a Senior Counselor for the ZooCamp branch run at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, MA. Alex has a passion for animals and the environment, and has worked as a Land Manager and Trail Maintainer for the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust, an Environmental Scientist for TRC Environmental in Lowell, MA and as a Researcher & Project Developer in Southwater Kaye, Belize!  In his spare time, Alex enjoys environmental activism (he has his own website www.ThinkGreenThoughts.org,) photography, rock climbing, hiking, teaching, reading, muscle car restoration and gardening.   Alex will be teaching the following camp sessions: Early Childhood Discovery, Outdoor Survival, Junior Explorers 1, Aquatic Aventures, No Place Like Home & Bird's the Word.

Jasmine & Janine Prokscha, Summer Camp Assistants

Jasmine (on the right in the photo) is returning for her second summer as a Summer Camp Assistant at Audubon Sharon.  She is a graduate of Kent School in Kent, CT and just completed her first year at Drew University.  Jasmine enjoys spending time outdoors and working with children.  This summer, Jasmine will be assisting with the following camp sessions: Outdoor Survival 101, Junior Explorers, Aquatic Adventures (July 20-24), No Place Like Home and Animal Boogie.  We are thrilled to have Jasmine back this summer! Janine (on the left) is Jasmine's younger sister and will be helping out with summer camp for the first time this summer.  She will be assisting Lynn with Junior Explorers, and also helping with Crunch, Munch, What's for Lunch.

Bimala Carl-Jones, Summer Camp Assistant

Although this is Bimala's first year working as a Summer Camp Assistant, she is no stranger to Audubon Sharon. Last year, as part of her community service project for Marvelwood School, Bimala worked as an Animal Care volunteer.  She was accepted into the Advanced Placement Environmental Science Class and has participated in Advanced Explorer Backpacking and Advance Explorer Canoe at Camp Widjiwagen in Minnesota.  For the past two years, Bimala also traveled to Panama for an ornithology project with Marvelwood School, where they banded migratory song birds and interacted with the native children in the village. Bimala will be a senior next year and plans to go to college focusing on wildlife/animal care. Bimala will be assisting with the following camp sessions this summer: Those Things with Wings, Nature Detectives, Animal Caretakers, Crunch Munch What's for Lunch and Bird's the Word.

Lynn Meehan, Volunteer Camp Counselor (no photo available)

Lynn has been a volunteer educator at Audubon Sharon for many years and is also the Education Chair for the Audubon Sharon Advisory Board.  She is a retired school teacher and, this past school year, was Director of the SOAR program at Salisbury Central School.  Lynn has helped with our summer camp programs in the past when one of our counselors fell ill or if we had a large number of students attending one session.  She has kindly offered her services again this year and will be leading an additional session of Junior Explorers so that we could accomodate all of the children on the wait list for that session.
