Species:  Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina
The Eastern Box Turtle is protected in Connecticut because its favorite habitat, old fields, are slowly disappearing.

This box turtle is about 50 years old and has been at the Center since 1973.

Box Turtles have a special hinge that allows the shell to close completely.

Box Turtles may live 60-80 years!

Turtles have beaks that are strong for biting vegetation.  They do not have teeth.
