Species:  Green Iguana, Iguana iguana
This lizard is called a green iguana.  They are found in the tropics such as the Caribbean and Mexico.  Iguanas are mostly vegetarian although they eat some insects.  They spend about 90% of the day sitting still.
Amazing Facts
  • Iguanas can change color
  • Iguanas have a large scale on         their cheek below the ear
  • Iguanas live in the tops of trees.
This Iguana came to the Center in November 1998.  He was abandoned after being given as a gift to someone who was not ready to care for an animal that lives 20 years and will grow longer than 4 feet long.  As with all pets , it is important to learn about an animal (what they eat, how big they get and how long they live) before buying one.  Some pets require a lot of care and responsibility.  The Green Iguana now resides at the Sharon Audubon Center and appears in many of our reptile programs.
