Amazing Facts

American Kestrels can hover in the air like a hummingbird.

Kestrels can see ultraviolet (UV) trails of mice in open fields.

The Kestrel has a false eye pattern on the back of its head.  It it is difficult for predators to see which direction the Kestrel is facing.

Liberty is a male American Kestrel.  Males have blue or gray wings, whereas females have brown or tan wings.  Liberty came to the Center on July 4, 1998, hence the name "Liberty."  His right wing is injured, probably due to a collision with a car.  He is one of our few resident birds who can fly short distances.
