| Ball Pythons are native to the savannah regions of Africa.
They have special pits above their mouth that detect heat, so they can
see warm-blooded animals in the dark.
They are often sold as pets in the United States. Unfortunately, many people purchase them without realizing how long they live, how large they get, or the care they require. |

| Two ball pythons were given to the Center in August 1998 for use in the education programs. They are valuable in teaching about the heat pits of snakes, since the only snakes in Connecticut with heat pits are the poisonous snakes, timber rattlesnake and copperhead. Ball Pythons are not poisonous. | |
