Eco camp intern
Location: Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Easton, MD

General Description
Pickering Creek Audubon Center is dedicated to community-based conservation
of natural resources through environmental education and outreach on the
Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The summer camp internship is designed for college students who want to gain experience working in the environmental education field. Interns will work as counselors for a series of ecology-themed day camp programs geared towards students in 2nd-8th grade. This position will provide a great teaching experience, naturalist training and an introduction to how a non-profit organization works. For more information visit www.pickeringcreek.org


Duration of this position is June 16 - August 8, 2008.
Primary Duties
Essential Functions:
  • Assist in developing and implementing ecology/nature-based curriculum in line with program goals
  • Provide a safe, fun, and educational environment
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of recreational activities, field trips, and overall camp operations
  • Assure health and safety of the participants, build positive group dynamics, and seek informal teaching opportunities

    Additional Functions:
  • Supervise and teach a group of 10-12 campers each week
  • Animal care and facilities maintenance
  • Mentor and work with a junior counselor who will be an invaluable part of your group each week
  • Compensation and Application Instructions
    $225 per week plus housing

    Qualifications
  • Applicants must be enthusiastic, energetic, and committed to working with students in an outdoor, camp setting.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguard certification a plus, but not required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements
    Must be able to hike short distances, lift 20 pounds and work outdoors in varying conditions.
