Education/Resource Management Internship
Location: Corkscrew Swamp SanctuaryNaples, Florida
Division/Department: Field/Sanctuary
Position Description
Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is an exceptional environmental education center located in southwest Florida. This 11,000-acre wilderness contains the largest remaining stand of subtropical bald cypress in North America. The Sanctuary is also home to one of the largest breeding colonies of endangered Wood Storks. More than 100,000 visitors enjoy the 2.25-mile boardwalk trail that meanders through pine flatwood, wet prairie and cypress swamp. In addition to general visitors, approximately 4,000 students complete programs at the Sanctuary or in their schools and nearly 3,000 adults participate in unique educational opportunities.
Primary Duties
Essential Functions:
Interns are involved in all aspects of the operation of the nature center. Primary duties include conducting and developing environmental education programs for students and adults and assisting with resource management (exotic plant control, prescribed burning, water management). Other duties include Sanctuary maintenance and visitor center operations. Interns must complete an independent project around a chosen field or interest. Opportunities to teach adult and youth programs are also available.

Full and part-time staff, volunteers.

External:
Visitors / guests on the Sanctuary boardwalk and center.
Qualifications
Some college level course work in environmental studies, biology, resource management, education or a related field. Teaching experience and/or knowledge of curriculum development is helpful. A strong natural history background, excellent communication skills, flexibility, enthusiasm and a desire to learn are required.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Must be physically fit. Frequent travel on foot over rough, mucky flooded areas; exertion from lifting and carrying equipment; and energy drain from cold, wet and windy weather in winter to hot, humid, and buggy conditions in summer. Lightning is a frequent hazard. The applicant must be in good physical condition and anticipate daily requirements to avoid dehydration, sunburn, insect bites, and injury.
Housing, Salary & School Credit:
Interns are housed in a furnished cabin with private bedroom, shared kitchen, bath and living area. The salary is the Florida State minimum wage. Students should arrange for school credit with their advisor beforehand.
Positions: 3-6 month positions area offered
Summer Naturalist, June - August, closing date when filled.
Fall Naturalist, September - December, closing date when filled.
Spring Naturalist, January - May, closing date when filled.
Dates are flexible, however preference will be given to those applicants able to commit to desired time frame.
