Resource Management Internship
Location: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary; Naples, FL

Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is an exceptional environmental education center located in southwest Florida. This 11,000-acre wilderness contains the largest remaining stand of subtropical bald cypress in North America. The Sanctuary is also home to one of the largest breeding colonies of endangered Wood Storks. More than 100,000 visitors enjoy the 2.25-mile boardwalk trail that meanders through pine flatwood, wet prairie and cypress swamp. Approximately 6,000 students complete programs at the Sanctuary or in their schools.

Positions available:
Summer Naturalist
June-August, closing date when filled.

Fall Naturalist
September - December, closing date when filled.

Spring Naturalist
January - May, closing date when filled.

School Year Naturalist
September-May, closing date when filled.

 
Primary Duties

Essential Functions:
Interns are involved in all aspects of the operation of the nature center. Primary duties include assisting with resource management (exotic plant control, prescribed burning, water management).

Additional Functions:
Other duties include conducting educational programs for adults and youth, Sanctuary maintenance, and visitor center operations. Resource management interns must complete an independent project around a chosen field of interest. Opportunities to teach adult and youth programs are also available.

Qualifications (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

Some college level course work in environmental studies, biology, resource management, education or a related field. Physical fitness, strong natural history background, excellent communication skills, flexibility, enthusiasm and a desire to learn are a must.

Housing and Salary

Interns are housed in a furnished cabin with private bedroom, shared kitchen, bath and living area. The salary is $150.00 per week.

Students should arrange for school credit with their advisor beforehand.
