Education & Volunteer Coordinator
Location: Maitland, FL
Immediate Supervisor: Center Administrator
Division/Department: Audubon Center for Birds of Prey

 

Purpose of the position

Develop, coordinate and implement volunteer and educational programs for Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. Assist in all facets of guest relations relating to the general public.

 

Primary Position Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement educational programs using live birds of prey consistent with Audubon of Florida’s Mission and Center for Birds of Prey educational program goals.
  • Design, develop, implement and evaluate all on-site and off-site education programs, including hands-on interactive science-based activities, signage and exhibits.
  • Maintain program calendar, provide monthly reports including program attendance. Track education program fees, income and expense.
  • Initiate marketing of education/outreach programs and special events including private and public schools, community organizations, Audubon Chapters and other professional organizations and potential donors within Florida.
  • Work with local school districts and community organizations to develop programs that meet Sunshine State (Florida) Standard guidelines where applicable.
  • Assist in increasing visitation of targeted audience groups to the Center
  • Assist in seeking funding sources including fundraising events and other development activities as necessary to support the education programs.
  • Develop and implement training materials and programs for volunteers.
  • Recruit, and schedule and maintain records of Center volunteers including interns, receptionist, docents, raptor care and clinic assistants.  Coordinate volunteer activities with Project EagleWatch Coordinator.
  • Supervise all Center education volunteers, receptionists and other personnel, as needed.
  • Greet visitors, answer phones and handle public inquiries when needed.
  • Ability to educate diverse audiences including but not limited to youth, adults, ethnicity, affluence, influence, politicians, decision makers, community groups and other Audubon targeted audiences.

Additional Functions:

  • Assist in various facility maintenance chores, live raptor activities and other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Relationships

Internal:

All Audubon staff and volunteers.

External:

Public and private schools, community clubs and other professional organizations, Audubon Chapters, other non-profit organizations, potential donors, general public, Center visitors and local and statewide media.

 

Equipment: (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, etc.)

Phones, Computer (MS Word, Excel, publisher), calculator, copy machine, fax, microphone, falconry equipment

 

Qualifications (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

  • Bachelor's degree in related field (biology, natural sciences, education)
  • One to two years teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience in public speaking and presentations.
  • Experience in designing and implementing education programs (environmental or other).
  • Raptor handling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Florida's raptors (anatomy and physiology).
  • General knowledge of conservation, preservation and natural areas in Florida.
  • Proficient phone and public relations skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and a team player.
  • Must be a self-starter. Able to work with time constraints and limited budget.
  • Current Florida Driver’s License and access to personal vehicle.
  • Criminal History background check with fingerprinting will be required.
  • Evening and/or weekend hours required.
 
Physical Requirements (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)

Ability to work outside in any weather for extended periods of time.  Must be able to stand or walk for at least four hours at a time.  Should be able to lift, push, carry and otherwise move up to 20lbs.  Must be able to drive long distances within state lines.
