Annual Fund Manager
Location: Emeryville, CA or W. Los Angeles, CA
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Development
Division/Department: Audubon California

 

Position Overview

The Annual Fund Manager will oversee all elements of Audubon California’s annual fund effort, including direct mail, specifically designing, implementing and growing the $250 - $1,000 level of giving program. Tasks include: writing and designing direct mail pieces, list development and segmentation, strategy, communication to donors by phone and email, and developing and maintaining budgets and deadlines. Responsibilities also involve the solicitation and renewals for “friends of” appeals – annual appeals designed for Centers and Sanctuaries, and renewals of the Lucy and John James Audubon Society Giving Society, the leadership giving program (gifts between $1,000 - $25,000) and fulfillment of benefits.

Participates in setting annual performance goals for development activity and results.   Reports all activity to Director of Development, as well as the Development Operations Manager, a Major Gifts Officer, Conservation and Program Directors.  Some web-based fundraising strategies may be involved in the development of the annual fund campaign effort.

Primary Duties

ANNUAL  FUND:

  • Works with Audubon staff to create strategies and approaches to increase the $250-$1,000 level of giving as part of the cultivation and/or solicitation process;
  • Develops and manages renewals and special appeals (centers, sanctuaries);
  • Develops and coordinates new donor acquisitions;
  • Develops and implements plan to upgrade donors;
  • Identifies and provides background for donors ready to be moved to a major gift portfolio;
  • Identifies major donor prospects to be cultivated by Center and Sanctuary Directors that have a “friends of” annual fund in place and work with Directors to engage and steward these donors and prospects;
  • Coordinates the development and printing of membership pieces and other collateral materials with key staff, mailing house to assure meeting deadlines;
  • Initiates contact and establishing rapport with new prospects, recent and lapsed donors and others who may have an interest in Audubon’s mission;
  • Engages prospects in conversations about Audubon programs and activities while identifying their specialized interests;
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of fundraising cultivation and stewardship events in Northern California;

DATABASE:

  • Maintains records for Lucy Club and “friends of” supporters/prospects for Centers and Sanctuaries;
  • Tracks and analyzes annual and special appeal solicitations;
  • Prepares quarterly reports on Fall and spring appeals, and Lucy Club efforts.
  • Reviews and is point person for NAS push reports and weekly reports

OTHER:

  • Helps with organizing walk-in lists, event attendees, to feed into annual appeals for Centers and Sanctuaries, the timely production of Fall and Spring appeals relevant to raising funds for annual appeals and Lucy Club effort for Audubon California; 
  • Attends appropriate meetings in person or via conference call;
  • Stays abreast of current legal, financial, and organizational developments in philanthropy;
  • Completes other tasks and projects as assigned by the Director of Development.
  • Database maintenance and record reconciliation as necessary.
 

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

This development position requires an individual who is able to think strategically and creatively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. A minimum of three years of fundraising and/or communciations experience.  Some travel within the state is required.  Proficiency in writing and relevant database experience is essential.

  • A can-do attitude and tolerant, friendly personality with a great sense of humor are essential;
  • At least three years of professional development experience, membership development, or equivalent;
  • Be comfortable and productive in a fast-paced, team, results oriented environment while being responsible for attaining own annual performance goals;
  • Be articulate and engaging, possessing interpersonal skills that can engage and be receptive to donor interest and perspectives;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Experience with direct marketing materials;
  • Experience with development data base management;
  • Be well-organized and able to handle details while pursuing overall goals; must be able to adapt quickly to a new organization;
  • Self-starter, and quickly create a positive network of relationships out in the field;
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team;
  • Ability to accept and integrate feedback from others;
  • Will represent Audubon’s mission, goals, and philosophies with the highest professional standards;
  • Computer literate; knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point, related fundraising software desirable;
  • Interest in conservation;
  • Bachelors degree required.
