Assistant Controller
Location: New York, NY

Purpose of Position

To manage the financial accounting and reporting processes for a national decentralized organization.

 

Essential Functions

  • Ensure that the financial records are properly maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Responsible for all accounting processes including:
    • Timely preparation of monthly and annual financial statements including variance analysis.
    • Timely and accurate transaction processing.
    • Review and reconciliation of all financial accounting records on a continual basis
    • Oversight and preparation of bank and investment reconciliations and reconciliation to general accounts
    • Review and follow up of all outstanding receivables and payables
    • Manage all aspects of the data entry area which includes Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Millennium.
    • Supervises Accounting staff, A/R and A/P supervisor to ensure efficient processing of information consistent with proper internal control.
  • Coordinate with field offices on problem solving, accounting activity review and reconciliations

 

Additional Functions

  • Providing information needed for various tax and regulatory filings
  • Management of cash balances and transfers
  • Accounting for and monitoring of all restricted and endowment funds, ensuring donor compliance
  • Ensure that field office bank reconciliations are prepared timely and accurately
  • Oversight and review of journal entries
  • Reconciliation of payroll filings to general ledger accounts
  • Fixed Assets Accounting
  • Overall responsibility and accountability for the timely completion of the fiscal audit, and it the team leader on the fiscal audit team.
  • Responsible for grants record keeping and the annual A133 audit.
  • Assist the Controller in development and implementation of Institution-wide policies and procedures.
  • Act as the primary interface with the IS Manager on systems issues relating to the functional areas reporting to the position in order to take full advantage of advances in technology.

 

Relationships

Internal: Interact on a daily basis with headquarter staff; external auditors

External: Interact on a daily basis with field staff.

Qualifications (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

  • Bachelors degree in accounting with minimum 7 years experience
  • Public accounting experience (mid-size firm a plus)
  • Able to function effectively in a very fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Strong Computer Skills Required– Excel, Word
  • Experience with Not-for-Profit Accounting Software – Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus
  • Experience with Not-for-Profit Accounting
  • Able to prioritize; work under pressure and handle multiple priorities concurrently
  • Good organizational and time management skills required
  • Excellent communication and customer service problem solving skills.
  • Excellent supervisory skills
  • Works requires willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting concepts/terminology is required
  • CPA preferred
