Center Director - Trinity River Audubon Center
Location: Dallas Texas
Immediate Supervisor: State Director
Division/Department: Trinity River

 

Position Overview

The Director of the Trinity River Audubon Center will be a strategic thinking entrepreneur, a leader, a fundraiser, and a charismatic facilitator who is able to work in partnership with a number of public and private entities to create and administer two Audubon Centers in North Texas.  The Director will be responsible for all aspects of planning and developing of the Centers.  The Director will have the primary responsibility for ensuring the two Centers planned in North Texas work in partnership to carry out the mission of Audubon.

 

Position Priorities
Program Development and Implementation
  • Hire and oversee key staff to deliver educational programs that contribute to environmental awareness and are consistent with Audubon’s 2020 Vision and exemplify the programmatic direction of the National Audubon Society.
  • Develop a close working relationship with the members of the Leadership Committee in North Texas, supporting services consistent with the policies and positions of Audubon.
  • Act as voice of Audubon in the North Texas area on the mission of Audubon, the programs developed around it, and the vision for the future.
  • Maintain an open communication network between the Centers Leadership Committee, Audubon Texas and the National Audubon Society.
Fundraising and Budgeting
  • Work with the Director of Development on all annual fundraising activities, proposals to individuals, foundations, corporations, and state and federal agencies. Work with Audubon staff to develop the annual budget for the Center’s.
  • Present and advocate the Center’s budgets.
  • Oversee the management of the operating expenses, income and capital budgets for the two Centers..
  • Work with the State Director and Director of Development on the implementation of the $5M endowment campaign for the Trinity River Audubon Center.
  • Identify and recruit a strong Stewardship Board for the Trinity River Audubon Center.
Marketing and Promotion
  • Work with staff to develop a marketing and promotions plan for both Centers and their programs.
  • Provide effective oral and written presentations, and serve as the Center’s spokesperson with the media.

Administration

  • Hire and supervise key staff.
  • Involve staff and key center partners in developing measurable goals and action plans, as well as a process for monitoring and assessing progress.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with other organizations that share the Audubon mission, including local Audubon chapters.
  • Oversee the management of the local Stewardship Board.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

 

Relationships

Internal: Audubon Texas Executive Director and Director of Development, North Texas Leadership Committee, National Audubon Society Senior VP for Centers and Education, National Audubon Society Director of Field Support--Centers & Education, and NAS senior leadership.

External:City of Dallas, Trinity River Corridor Project Office, The Trinity Trust, donors/supporters (individual, corporate, foundation, and state and federal agency); potential supporters; and community leaders.

 

Measurement of Performance

  • Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships with Executive Director of the Audubon Texas Office, Dallas Audubon Society, Audubon members, and the larger conservation community.
  • Meet all operation and program development goals.
  • Meet all assigned deadlines.  Meet all administrative and reporting standards.
  • Meet all fundraising and development requirements.

 

Qualifications (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

The successful Director will work collaboratively with individuals in a team-oriented atmosphere and will be the lead fundraiser for North Texas.  The Director must be able to think strategically and creatively, juggle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work in a dynamic environment.  The Director must be able to effectively manage change.  A can-do attitude and a tolerant, friendly personality with a great sense of humor are essential.  Good organizational skills and a facility for working with volunteers are required.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software is essential.

Minimum Bachelor’s degree in environmental related studies, non-profit management, or related field required--graduate degree preferred.  Leadership experience in non-profit management is required; Executive Director experience is preferred.  Proven experience in budget development and management, including fundraising.  Ability to articulate the mission and inspire participation is essential.  Demonstrated success in the management of very motivated staff and volunteers.

Applicants with experience working with nonprofit, volunteer-based organizations are preferred.  Direct experience in the Dallas market is highly desirable.  This is a full-time position.  Salary is commensurate with experience.  This position includes full employee benefits, including health insurance and retirement savings plans.
