Development Associate

Purpose of the position:
The Development Associate will be responsible for raising the contributed income goals for the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center. The Development Associate will be responsible for activities designed to broaden the scope and effectiveness of Iain Nicolson Audubon Center’s fundraising initiatives. Organization, motivation, and supervision of volunteer fundraising efforts are primary activities. The position will be responsible for tracking ongoing efforts to cultivate both individual and institutional donors and for soliciting contributions. The position will prepare grant proposals and requests, manage grants, coordinate special events, produce, development of promotional materials (including print, multimedia and web-based materials), and other duties as assigned. The Development Associate will oversee the processing of gifts, the recognition of donors, and tracking and projection of contributed revenue. Development activities will be coordinated with the staff at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center in order to avoid duplication of efforts within the state.
Primary Duties:
- Work with Center Director to create annual fund raising plan, including suggesting strategies for increasing income;
- Organize, motivate, and supervise volunteer fundraising efforts.
- Oversee administrative staff in maintenance of donor and community leader database, generating reports, mailing lists, call lists and mailing labels as needed;
- Assist with marketing and promotion of the Center in order to raise awareness in the donor community;
- Organize complex mailings to donors and community members, such as mail merges, annual reports, event invitations and holiday cards;
- Maintain development files, both electronic and hard copy;
- Grant writing and reports (will involve word processing);
- Oversee processing of all contributions and acknowledgements received;
- Report to funders on status of grant projects;
- Provide staff support to Stewardship Board development efforts;
- Represent Audubon with knowledge and understanding of programs and activities, interacting with donors, supporters, volunteers, media, and community leaders;
- Organize special events for donors/supporters;
- Attend Stewardship Board meetings;
- Other duties as assigned. These may include covering the reception desk during absences of the Office Manager.

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)
Applicant should have: excellent written/oral communication skills; excellent organizational skills; ability to handle simultaneous projects and meet deadlines; good knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access; creative team player; ability to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity; willing to take initiative. Bachelor’s degree preferred together with at least three years of experience in a position handling functions similar to those needed for the primary duties described above. Experience with event planning preferred. Experience using desktop publishing; photo editing and presentation software (such as Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Microsoft Powerpoint) would be a plus. Similarly, experience in obtaining financial and personal information about companies and individuals on-line would be a plus. Successful candidate will be trained in Millennium, a donor management database program. Applicant should have a basic appreciation for or interest in nature and conservation. |
