Field Technician

Purpose of the position
To assist the State Director of Research in field and office activities associated with the current projects. |

| Essential Functions |
- Successful applicant will be responsible for the collection, identification, preservation and cataloging of aquatic vegetation, fish and macroinvertebrates along with capture and banding of wading and songbirds.
- Successful applicant will be responsible for maintenance of vehicles and all field gear, assisting with site preparation and construction (as needed), and participating in group projects to maintain the base facility and improve operations
- Successful applicant will be responsible for accurate processing of data (including sorting and identification of fish and macroinvertebrates) and entering this information into appropriate databases

| Additional Functions |
- Knowledge of wetland ecosystems is helpful
- A firm understanding and respect of the scientific method is paramount.
- The job requires long hours in the field exposed to the harsh South Florida environment (applicants may sometimes work alone in this very difficult habitat).
- The applicant must be in good physical condition and be able to anticipate the demands of each field trip to avoid dehydration etc. Physical abilities include tolerance for and ability to work diligently in harsh field conditions (Florida sun, heat, biting insects, and wading in water/mud), with the recognition, understanding, and willingness to deal with the possibility of swimming or wading in murky water that serves as the home for potentially dangerous wildlife (i.e., alligators and venomous snakes).
- Assistance with research projects may involve travel in helicopters and small, fixed-wing aircraft.
- Applicant will be responsible for maintenance of vehicles and all field gear, assisting with site preparation and construction (as needed), and participating in group projects to maintain the base facility and improve operations.
- A firm understanding and respect of the scientific method is paramount.
- Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment (trucks, boats, etc.) is highly desirable.

| Relationships |
Internal: work at direction of immediate supervisor, available to work with other teams when possible.
External: limited interaction with Park personnel when working in the field

| Equipment: (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, BlackBerry etc.) |
Computer, hydrologic monitoring equipment, boat and vehicle operation, all standard office equipment, workshop tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, saws, etc.).

| Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, and skills) |
A minimum of a B.S. in Biology or related discipline required. Must be able to secure a Florida drivers license.

| Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.) |
As stated above, this job requires outdoor physical labor in sub-tropical wetland environments.
