Background
Audubon Vermont, a state program of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest and largest conservation organizations in the U.S., has an opening for a part-time major gifts position in Vermont. Founded in 1905, The National Audubon Society is a national nonprofit conservation organization with 450,000 members and close to 500 local chapters throughout the country. Our mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats, for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. Audubon Vermont pursues its mission through a range of activities, including science, policy, education and on-the-ground conservation initiatives.
Purpose of the Position
Working closely with staff and board at Audubon Vermont, the Major Gifts Officer will identify, cultivate and solicit donors in support of Audubon’s conservation agenda. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to: take primary responsibility for developing and managing a variety of relationships, close gifts and coordinate with key staff and volunteers. Participates in setting annual performance goals for development activity and results. Manages a portfolio of approximately 75 prospects, exclusively individuals, including both current donors and new prospects with no prior Audubon association. Reports to the Executive Director and coordinates with the Development Coordinator, other staff and board members.
Primary Duties
Reach annual major gift goals as part of performance objectives, by:
- Initiating contact and establishing rapport with new prospects, current and lapsed major donors, board members, community leaders, and others who may have an interest in major funding of Audubon’s mission;
- Working with Audubon staff to shape fundraising strategies and promote the highest standards of donor stewardship;
- Managing a portfolio of 75 major prospects with responsibility to move relationships toward major gifts;
- Closing key gifts to meet mutually agreed upon annual goals;
- Tracking and reporting monthly on identification, cultivation, and closing of gifts in the context of annual performance goals;
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with key internal constituents, including staff, board, chapters and other volunteers.
- Promoting and communicating the vision and goals of Audubon to key prospects. Representing Audubon at receptions, special events and making presentations as required.
- Performing other duties for Audubon Vermont, as needed.
Relationships
Internal: Audubon staff in Vermont and contacts in other states and the Home Office, board of directors, and volunteers.
External: Donors and prospects, as well as other organizations.

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)
- Bachelors degree required;
- Self-starter, able to quickly develop a positive network of relationships;
- Strong comfort level with telephone interaction, personal visits and group presentations;
- Professional development experience, including prior major gift solicitation preferred; Planned Giving experience a plus;
- Working knowledge of Vermont donor base, community leadership, and philanthropic activity highly desirable;
- Comfortable and productive in a collegial culture while being responsible for attaining individual annual performance goals;
- Willingness to work from home office;
- Articulate, engaging and receptive to donor interests and perspectives;
- Strong planning, organization, time management, communications and multi-tasking skills.
- Well organized and able to handle details while pursuing overall goals;
- Represents Audubon’s mission and philosophy with the highest professional standards;
- Interest in and understanding of conservation a distinct plus;
- Excellent writing skills; success in proposal development a plus;
- Computer literate; knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
- Must have valid Vermont Drivers License & automobile.
