National Outreach Coordinator
Location: Washington, DC
Immediate Supervisor:
Division/Department: Public Policy, Grassroots

 

Purpose of the Position

This position has primary responsibility for implementing Audubon’s grassroots strategy to advocate for improved federal conservation policies and funding to address a variety of issues, including, but not confined to: Global Warming/Energy, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other public lands issues, Endangered Species Act and other wildlife related statutes, Ecosystem Restoration, and Audubon’s Population & Habitat program. Conservation funding issues that relate to the above and others. Key role is to identify, recruit and train Audubon volunteer leaders throughout the US to participate in the Audubon network and national policy issues.

More generally, the position entails grassroots communication, training and organizing on all the issues in which the Audubon D.C. office engages and, to the extent possible, issues identified by Audubon state offices and chapters.

 

Essential Functions

Identify, recruit, train and mobilize activists in support of positions and policies that protect birds and other wildlife habitat. Target priority states for conservation campaigns and strategically influence decision makers to shape federal policy.

Support and coordinate the activities of local chapter leaders and activists to improve their knowledge, skills and advocacy effectiveness.

Implement Audubon’s grassroots initiatives at the national, local and state levels.

Oversee the organizing of events in communities around the U.S.  Assist field staff in organizing and conducting community awareness-building events, grassroots organizing efforts and advocacy training workshops.

Help implement improved activation/mobilization strategy for the advocacy network. Coordinate with DC staff on targeting and strategy, organizing visits to decision makers, conducting national advocacy training, media strategy and other outreach.

Help manage field organizers where appropriate.

Document contacts in a central location and ensure necessary follow up.

 

Additional Functions

Participate in program planning on strategy for advocacy, media campaigns, Web site design and fundraising.

Deliver talks on issues at Audubon chapter meetings and other public events.

Look for opportunities to coordinate the work of the national policy office with that of other Audubon entities in target states to build relationships and encourage conservation outcomes.

Contribute written articles on activities to newsletters, updates, Web site and the policy and other listserves.

Report on chapter activities and interests as observed in the field.

Help deliver alerts, invitations and other communications via the Get Active database system.

 

Relationships

Internal:
Collaborate with NAS policy staff, state offices, chapters, and education and centers staff. 

External:
Work with national, state or local organizations as their activities relate to issues in DC Policy office.

 
 
Equipment: (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, etc.)

Computer experience.

 

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

Prefer a degree in Environmental Sciences, Political Science or Public Administration or equivalent experience. Some previous grassroots organizing experience and knowledge of federal policy process strongly preferred. Strong organizational skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Willingness to travel frequently and possibly on short notice.  Demonstrated commitment to the issues of wildlife and wildlife habitat. Responsible, self- motivated, organized team player.

 

Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)

Some lifting of boxes and moving equipment (50 max) and other light physical duties.  Stamina required for frequent travel, including considerable walking and standing for events and presentations.
