Summer Camp Naturalist II

General Description

The Audubon Center at Bent of the River is a 700-acre nature center and sanctuary.  Located in Southbury, Connecticut along the Pomperaug River, the sanctuary encompasses 15 miles of trails among diverse group of habitats including unfragmented forest, grasslands, meadows, riparian forest, vernal pools, and red maple swamps. 

The Center offers inquiry-based summer nature camps M-F for students entering grades 4-8. Each camp session focuses on a different theme and is highlighted by a visit from a guest scientist or speaker.  The camp season is seven weeks long with an additional week at the start of the season for staff training.

Full Time, June 23-August 15, 2008   
8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

 

Primary Duties

Essential Functions:
Summer Camp naturalists are involved in all aspects of the summer camp program.  Primary responsibilities include preparing and teaching week-long nature programs for small groups of middle school students in grades 4-8.  Activities may include simple science investigations, nature hikes, environmental games and crafts developed by naturalists under the direction of the Day Camp Director and Education Specialist at Bent of the River.  Each summer camp week will have a different theme that will guide curriculum development.

Summer camp naturalists will be required to participate in a training week prior to the start of camp that will involve learning local

ecology, hiking trails with Audubon naturalists and planning the 7 week camp curriculum.

This position will provide naturalists with valuable teaching experience, naturalist training, an understanding of how a non-profit organization works as well as many rewarding networking opportunities. 

 

Qualifications

Completion of two years of college level coursework in environmental science, biology, education or a related field is preferred.  Some teaching experience and/or curriculum development experience is necessary.  Most important assets are an interest in natural history, a desire to learn, enthusiasm, flexibility and the ability to work well with others.   A background check is required for all applicants over 18 years of age and all applicants must have current immunizations/medical forms and be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification during the training week.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements

Ability to hike short distances over moderate terrain, lift 20 lbs, and work outside in varying conditions required.

 

Additional Requirements

Applicants should have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

 

Compensation

Salary Range from $350-400/week depending on experience. Employment runs June 23 -August 15, M-F 8:00 AM-3:00 PM (includes staff training). No camp July 4th. 

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge of local ecology and natural history; college coursework in biology, ecology, or related field preferred. Experience working with children necessary. Ability and desire to work outdoors and lead nature hikes. Enthusiasm for nature and teaching. Must have current immunizations/ medical forms.
