Teacher Naturalist / Volunteer Coordinator

Purpose of the Position
The Seward Park Environmental & Audubon Center, a nature education facility located in Seattle, WA, is searching for a Teacher Naturalist / Volunteer Coordinator. The Center is a partnership between National Audubon Society and the City of Seattle and anticipates serving 10,000-12,000 people annually through programs with an additional 15,000-20,000 drop-in visitors expected. The Teacher Naturalist / Volunteer Coordinator is an employee of Audubon. This position prepares and presents formal and informal high quality education programs on and off site and develops, coordinates, and implements volunteer programs conducted by the Center.
Essential Functions
Teacher Naturalist
- Develop and implement hands-on, multi-disciplinary, informal and formal, science-based education programs for school programs (middle and high school targeted), in-class programs, teacher materials, camp programs, formal adult education, and youth programs (e.g., Talking Tree).
- Take the lead on developing Audubon Education Kits for a variety of audiences (e.g., classrooms, park users).
- Work with other staff members to develop and implement creative public programming.
- Maintain and enhance existing curricula.
- Coordinate and develop community and family programs.
- Train and coordinate education interns.
- Assist with implementation of marketing and outreach.
- Administration of day-to-day operations of the Center’s education programs.
- Assist in overall Center responsibilities.
- Perform all duties deemed necessary by the Education and Center Directors to further the mission of the Seward Park Environmental & Audubon Center.
Volunteer Coordinator
- Recruit, train, and schedule the volunteer program. Provide workshops, walks, field trips and other programs needed for training of volunteers. Teach workshops as appropriate.
- Develop volunteer training materials.
- Oversee the production of a volunteer newsletter sent out quarterly.
- Grow volunteer program by promoting and advertising program in local communities.
- Maintain the volunteer area by ordering supplies, cleaning, and scheduling repairs. In addition keep an inventory of all program materials, keeping all items in good working condition.
- Provide for volunteer recognition by conducting recognition events and awards.

Create an evaluation program that provides for volunteer needs and addresses quality levels required by Audubon.
- Create policies as needed for volunteer program.
Additional Functions
- Help schedule and conduct special events hosted by the center.
- Assist in planning for Education and Programming.
- Assist with miscellaneous duties, respond to emergency situations; assume other responsibilities assigned by the Director.
- Assist in increasing visitation of targeted audience groups to the Center.
- Greet visitors, answer phones, and handle public inquires when needed.
Relationships
Internal: Report to Education Director; keep the Education Director informed of all aspects of the position’s responsibilities and duties. Coordinate activities with Center Director, Education Director and other Center staff. Supervise assigned part-time personnel, interns and volunteers.
External: Seattle City Parks Department, local schools, and other partners; donors; state and local Audubon chapter(s) staff, members, and volunteers; Center volunteers; community members; and media.

Equipment
Computer, multi-line phone and voicemail system, copier, scanner, laminator, fax machine, and pc software.
Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)
- Bachelor’s degree in education, natural sciences or similar program of study.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, conducting, and evaluating education programs.
- Familiarity with education standards, learning theory, current education initiatives and ecological principles.
- Experience working with, training, and coordinating large numbers of volunteers.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and some evenings, Tuesday through Saturday regular schedule.
- Must have computer experience with accounting, word-processing and data base applications, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Quicken, and internet and e-mail. Some desktop publishing experience desirable.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be self-motivated, able to take initiative and solve problems.
Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)
- Ability to work outside in any weather for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to stand or walk for at least 4 hours at a time.
- Should be able to lift, push, carry, and otherwise move up to 40lbs.
- Center is located in a three-story building with no elevator, so ability to climb stairs is essential.
