Photo of the Day: Swallow-tailed Kite

Marina Scarr shoots two swallow-tailed kites sharing a meal.

A pair of swallow-tailed kites took up residence at Sawgrass Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. “I felt privileged to witness and photograph them through the mating and nesting process as well as the rearing of their young,” says Marina Scarr. This frame, she says, was captured as the result of a combination of luck and patience. After mating, the male swallow-tailed kite generally feeds the female. In this case, he attempted to feed her a tree frog on the wing and missed on three occasions before finally landing on the perch beneath her and handing it up.
