"Our nation and our world face serious energy and environment challenges and we are heartened by President Obama's desire to provide the strong leadership that will be necessary. We can stop the global warming threat and rebuild our economy at the same time by dedicating ourselves to expanding clean energy and limiting greenhouse gas emissions."
President Barack Obama got several standing ovations from both Democrats and Republicans in a speech before a joint session of Congress that made clean energy a high priority.
Among his more memorable statements, the President said, "We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy. Yet we import more oil today than ever before," and "we know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century."
The President called for a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, a doubling of renewable energy in three years, billions in clean energy investment and creation of a smart grid to deliver clean energy to Americans.
