State of the Birds: WatchList 2007 Press Room

The following are biographies for teleconference participants:

John Flicker, President & CEO, National Audubon Society
Since joining Audubon in 1995, John Flicker has focused on building a community-based organization that protects birds, other wildlife and their habitat by engaging people locally. Under his leadership, Audubon opened 26 state offices and launched the Important Bird Areas program. At the national level, Audubon championed many public policy issues such as protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Mr. Flicker came to Audubon after 21 years with The Nature Conservancy, where he served in a variety of key positions. As the Conservancy's Florida State Director he was most recognized for his leadership role in a $3 billion preservation land acquisition program. An attorney by training, Flicker is an author (Audubon, the Second Century: Connecting People With Nature) and a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.

Greg Butcher, Director Bird Conservation, National Audubon Society
Greg Butcher is Director of Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society, overseeing the State of the Birds analyses and other research related to bird conservation. Dr. Butcher works closely with many partner organizations including American Bird Conservancy, BirdLife International, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, and Partners in Flight.

Dr. Butcher has a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington. He previously served as Director of Bird Population Studies at Cornell University's Laboratory of Ornithology and is an elective member of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU).

Mike Daulton, Director of Conservation Policy, National Audubon Society
Mike Daulton is Director of Conservation Policy for the National Audubon Society. With eight years of experience in Audubon’s Public Policy Division in Washington, DC, Mr. Daulton is a veteran of legislative battles over the fate of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Endangered Species Act, and has broad expertise in issues facing America’s public lands and migratory birds.

Mr. Daulton has a Master of Public Policy degree from Duke University and a B.S. in Ecology from the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. George H. Fenwick, President, American Bird Conservancy
Dr. George Fenwick founded the American Bird Conservancy in 1994, and became President upon its merger with the U.S. and Pan American Sections of the International Council for the Preservation of Birds later that year. He worked in a variety of capacities during 15 years with The Nature Conservancy including Vice President and Director of Ecosystem Conservation, Acting Director of Science, and Chair of the Steering Committee for the Last Great Places Campaign. Prior to that, he has worked for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Earthsatellite Corporation, and been an instructor at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Fenwick received a Ph.D. from the Department of Pathobiology at Johns Hopkins University, studying the effects of alien species on native avifauna.

Dr. David N. Pashley, Vice President of Conservation Programs, American Bird Conservancy
Dr. Pashley received a Ph.D. from the School of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at Louisiana State University. His dissertation title was "A Distributional Analysis of the Warblers of the West Indies". In addition to being an instructor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and serving six years in the Science and Stewardship programs of The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Pashley has had a long association with Partners in Flight. Among his responsibilities with PIF, he served as Chair of the Southeast Working Group and National Coordinator.
