Important Bird Areas
Audubon's Important Bird Areas (IBA) program is a response
to continuing habitat loss in Florida, and its subsequent
reduction of the state's birdlife. The IBA program will assist
decision makers in identifying areas most important for maintaining
bird populations by protecting the habitats of rare species,
as well as "keeping common birds common." In addition,
the IBA program provides essential information for state land
management agencies to properly manage habitats for birds,
including the use of prescribed fire and limiting human intrusion
during the nesting season.
Through the end of 2001, Audubon of Florida
sought nominations of sites as potential IBAs from Audubon
members, land managers and other biologists, birders, and
individuals throughout the state. All sites nominated have
met the criteria of at least one of four categories and has
been reviewed by a committee composed of some of the state's
leading ornithologists and conservation biologists.
