Where: On
the Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska, about 150
miles from Anchorage.
Habitat:
The refuge's nearly 2 million acres include snow-covered
alpine peaks, glaciers, foothills, boreal forests, and
wetlands.
Wildlife: Originally
set aside to protect the moose, the peninsula is also
home to Dall sheep, mountain goats, barren ground caribou,
and gray wolves. The abundant salmon runs attract hungry
brown bears and black bears.
Activities:
Birdwatching, hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country
skiing, canoe trails, environmental education.
