Deer Isle - Shingle Island
A small (9.2-acre) island located about four miles off-shore and east of Stonington.
Ornithological Summary
This small island is a consistent wintering spot for Purple Sandpipers, with as many as 300 congregating at any one time.
Conservation Issues
Because Deer Isle islands are in LURC jurisdiction, this island is zoned P-FW (Protection-Fish and Wildlife). Typical off-shore threats include oil spills and other forms of pollution.
Ownership
The island is privately owned with an easement held by Acadia National Park. There is no public access.
