The area surrounding Garrison Dam includes the southern end
of Lake Sakakawea, the dam tailrace, and the Missouri River down to a point ~2
miles below the dam.

Conservation Issues

Water management of Lake Sakakawea and other mainstem
Missouri River reservoirs is the primary factor affecting habitat quality
here.  Factors related to that management
include availability of forage fish passing through the dam outlet and the lack
of flooding in and near the floodplain forest.

The entire IBA is public land managed by the ND Land

Land Use

The area is managed for recreation, flood control, &
hydroelectric power generation.
