Significant nesting site for Black-crowned Night-Herons and Double-crested Cormorants.. Formerly supported a huge Caspian Tern colony.

Owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge, under Seney National Wildlife Refuge personnel.


Mostly forested upland on the island's interior with beaches and willow shrubs on the upper reaches of some of the beachfront.
