Climbing into the rugged rolling desert hills, NM-61 follows the Lower Mimbres Valley from the small ranching community of Dwyer. Going north on NM-35 at San Lorenzo, you wind through the Upper Mimbres Valley, a farming and ranch community and come to The Nature Conservancy Mimbres Preserve on your right. Climbing further into the pine country of the Gila Forest, the Mimbres River and the Black Range rise to the north and east. The area is mostly well maintained riparian woodland under multiple ownerships. This area has been identified as a high priority for conservation by The Nature Conservancy. The 30 mile stretch is an excellent example of riparian gallery forest.
Directions: NM-35 and NM-61 follow the Mimbres River from The Nature Conservancy Preserve north of the village of Mimbres to south of Dwyer.
Common Black-Hawk and Yellow-billed Cuckoo nest along the river.
