The IBA is in the northwestern part of Santa Barbara county near the city of Guadalupe. Point Sal is located off the coast of Point Sal State Beach. Further inland Vandenberg Air Force Base is located.

Point Sal 121W35N is an IBA for the following species: Pink-footed Shearwater. It contains an estimated 70 Pink-footed Shearwater (breeding). These surveys were conducted between 1987 and 2006. The following species are on the Audubon WatchList: Pink-footed Shearwater. Point Sal also has over 100 breeding roosts of Brown Pelicans located on the shore. The waters off of Point Sal provide feeding waters for the pelicans. The area between Point Sal and Point Piedras Blancas support 60% of the Brown Pelican population. The area also has an abundance of fishes and marine mammals.

Habitat

The Point Sal 121W35N IBA is characterized by the following habitat types: open water. The IBA is located in the Northern California ecoregion. The IBA is located in the Northern California ecoregion. Point Sal marks the northernmost point of the Southern California Bright, where the Channel Islands are located. From the north, cold Oregonian waters travel south with the California current system and mix with the warm, saline waters from the bright. The causes upwelling and extremely productive waters, with large kelp forests. The formation of the coastline also contributes to this upwelling.
