The Wyoming Hereford Ranch is a working cattle ranch famous for its breeding Hereford bulls. The ranch is approximately 6,000 acres and located immediately east of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The ranch contains a variety of habitats including riparian corridor along Crow Creek, irrigated meadows, reservoirs, cottonwood stands and native shortgrass prairie. Over two miles of Crow Creek meander through the property. Present and past ranch owners have done an excellent job in preserving and managing these unique wildlife habitats in association with their livestock operations.

Ornithological Summary

The ranch provides important nesting, feeding, migration and wintering habitat for birds. Wetland irrigated meadows and woody riparian habitats attract a great variety of birds, especially during spring migration. Well over 150 species of birds have been documented. The wooded riparian area adjacent to the ranch headquarters is well known for its warbler species. Over 50% of the species of warblers found in North America have been documented in this area.

Conservation Issues

Because of the proximity of Cheyenne, threat of development is the primary concern. The present owners have done an excellent job in preserving this habitat so far. They have mentioned looking into ways to preserve the rural character of the ranch. Types of conservation easements should be researched. They would like to form a Crow Creek Valley association with their neighbors.
