Birds of Grange Insurance Audubon Center

Explore the birds you might see when you visit.

Grange Insurance Audubon Center, one of Audubon’s 32 conservation action centers, is located on the Scioto River in the Mississippi Flyway just south of downtown Columbus, Ohio. Situated on the Whittier Peninsula within the boundaries of the Scioto-Greenlawn Important Bird Area (IBA), the center is surrounded by critical migratory stopover habitat for hundreds of bird species, from Yellow-rumped Warblers to Great Egrets.

The Scioto-Greenlawn IBA encompasses a three-mile stretch of the Scioto River from the I-70/71 bridge to the southern end of Berliner Park, including Grange Insurance Audubon Center in Scioto Audubon Metro Park and the 360-acre Green Lawn Cemetery one mile west of the river. The IBA houses a dam-produced basin, a seasonal mudflat, and rocky riffles. The Scioto Trail bicycle path runs through the area just south of the center, making a convenient path for birders. At least 212 bird species have been recorded at this IBA, more than any other stretch of the Scioto River. It provides habitat for neotropical songbirds, is a migrant hub for warblers, and is historically a nesting site for Prothonotary Warblers.
