The sanctuary protects 2,600 acres of globally rare habitat on Currituck Sound—from extensive freshwater marshes to upland maritime forest—making it one of the most important places for birds in the hemisphere. Pine Island is home to tens of thousands of ducks and swans ever winter and countless songbirds and shorebirds in the summer, from twittering Purple Martins to nesting Osprey.
