Welcome to the Audubon Pine Island Sanctuary in Corolla, North Carolina.
Visitors are encouraged to sign up for a commercially guided kayak trip in Currituck Sound and to explore the sanctuary's 2.5-mile nature trail, which is located south of the sanctuary's gates (not inside the gates) and is open to the public every day of the year, sunrise to sunset.
The gated portion of Pine Island is not open to the general public without a reservation. Community or university groups interested in coordinating a planned visit can contact Robbie Fearn, Pine Island Sanctuary Director, at robert.fearn@audubon.org.
The Audubon Sanctuary Nature Trail is a 2.5-mile path, tucked behind the Pine Island Racquet and Fitness Club (not behind the sanctuary gates), allows visitors to experience an amazing diversity of birds and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy the maritime forest, the Currituck Sound marshes, wildlife and amazing bird-watching vistas.
You may access the north end of the trail behind the fitness club or the south end of the trail at the Currituck/Dare County line near the Sanderling Resort. There are two observation platforms on the trail that overlook the vast marshes along the Currituck Sound.
