Bird Walk Leaders

Volunteer at Randall Davey

Make a difference and become a volunteer!

Volunteers play a vital role in our shared mission to conserve the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Wildlife Sanctuary and support the our education and community building efforts throughout Santa Fe and northern New Mexico.

Basic Information

  • Most of our regularly scheduled volunteer positions require specific time commitments based on the needs of each position.
  • Regularly scheduled adult volunteers must pass a background check. Volunteering can't begin until the background check has been cleared and assigned training has been completed.
  • Prior experience is not required to be considered for a volunteer position. Interest and availability are much more important than experience, and volunteering is a great way to learn a new skill. Orientation and training will allow you to succeed!
  • Volunteer opportunities for people needing to fulfill court-ordered community service hours are not available.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Visitor Center Hospitality: Volunteers serve as our unofficial "ambassadors.” Duties include greeting visitors, answering questions about birds, trails, and more, and processing cash and credit card purchases in our nature store. Volunteers work 3.5-hour shifts, either 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m.–4 p.m. Shifts are during one of these time slots Monday through Saturdays.
  • Historic House and Studio Docent: Docents lead tours of Randall Davey’s historic home and studio, providing information on the rich history of the artist and his connection to Santa Fe. Tours are 2 p.m. on Fridays.
  • Naturalist Docent: Our Center Naturalist Docents engage with visitors around the gardens and main grounds, proving bird, plant and animal identification as well as information on trails. They are a welcoming presence at the center.
  • Gardens, Facilities, and Trail Crews: Do you like working outside, using tools, and problem solving? We need you. Our buildings, grounds, gardens, and trails all require ongoing and year-round upkeep.
  • Bird Walk Leaders: If you consider yourself a competent bird identifier and educator, we welcome your help.  Potential new volunteers will be paired with trained Bird Walk Leaders on Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m.
  • Education Programs: Volunteers assist our staff educators with programs in the local schools, at the Center, and during on-site summer camp activities.
  • Seed Librarian: A seasonal position, seed librarians help us harvest seed from the Center’s native plant gardens, package, label, and stock our seed library.
