Spatula querquedula

A simple vista

This Eurasian teal is sometimes found as a vagrant on freshwater lakes and marshes in North America. Because waterfowl are often kept in captivity, it is often difficult to distinguish wild vagrants from escapees. Garganey are rarely kept in captivity as they retain breeding plumage only briefly, so most reports are thought to be true vagrants. A highly social and gregarious species, they migrate southward on a broad front beginning in late July and peaking in August-September. During the winter in Africa they wander in relation to seasonal flooding. Flocks of several thousand are common in Africa and Asiatic winter grounds. Northward migration begins in February, with birds beginning to arrive on the breeding grounds from March-May.
