California Biodiversity Day (September 7) kicks off a full week celebrating our state’s role as a global biodiversity hotspot on Saturday, September 6. In-person and virtual events across California are hosted by state and federal agencies, tribes, local communities, NGOs, museums, zoos, and universities, all working to connect people with the incredible diversity of life here in California.
Audubon California and Audubon community chapters are joining the celebration with bird walks, BioBlitz activities, and more. To explore all events near you, visit the California Biodiversity Day events page.
Our Audubon Conservation Ranching and Working Lands teams will be joining Sacramento Valley Conservancy on the ground for tabling and helping lead a bioblitz group. Participate in a fun day of searching and learning as we get to know our plant and animal neighbors, and connect with local conservation organizations.
Join us for an introductory bird hike to learn the basics of birding and explore how the Center is creating bird-friendly communities. All ages and birding knowledge levels are welcome. No admission fee.

Join the Santiago Canyon College Audubon Student Chapter at Peter’s Canyon Regional Park south entrance. Parking is free but limited street parking so please make sure to arrive early or carpool. The trail will be flat 2 miles with some shade and slight downhill with narrow trails. Be sure to bring, sunscreen, snacks, water, and expect warm weather.
Join the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) and Sacramento Audubon Society for a family-friendly bird walk along the American River scenic trail. Expect easy walking with frequent stops to scan the river, riparian habitat, and surrounding bluffs for local resident birds. Participants should be prepared with comfortable shoes, sun protection, and water. Extra binoculars will be available if you don't have your own.
Join the fun and go birding for with San Fernando Valley Audubon Society! The Sepulveda Basin is a 2,100+ acre flood control basin, with the Los Angeles River and several tributaries coursing through it.
California is one of 36 biodiversity hotspots in the world, with exceptional richness of life across our varied lands and waters. Join us virtually for a California Natural Resources Agency discussion moderated by Secretary Wade Crawfoot, in celebration of California Biodiversity Week as we geek out with experts on some particularly colorful forms of life that call our state home. There’s never been a more important time to get inspired and energized to protect our natural world!
Join Audubon California’s Lindsay Rowe and California State Parks for a peaceful morning of quiet observation and connection with nature. Feathered Focus invites you to slow down, sit in stillness, and tune in to the sights and sounds of local birdlife. Whether you're a seasoned birder or simply curious, this gentle experience offers a chance to deepen your awareness and appreciation of the natural world—one feathered visitor at a time. Binoculars and field guides will be available. No RSVP needed but please note there is an entrance fee to Salton Sea State Recreation Area.
