Join or Start a Christmas Bird Count

Learn how to participate in or lead a Christmas Bird Count survey.

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual bird census powered by volunteers that takes place between December 14 and January 5 each year. Participation is free and open to bird enthusiasts of any level. There are two main ways to participate: 

  • Feeder Counts: Count all the birds you see or hear from your own backyard or local park at a stationary bird feeder within a CBC circle. No binoculars or hiking required, and you can participate with less time commitment. 
  • Field Counts: Survey an area (alone or in groups) during daylight hours and record all the birds you see or hear. Some counts also include nocturnal surveys after dark to record owls and other night-active species.

How to Prepare for Your Count 

Count day might look different depending on your circle, location, and whether you're a field or feeder counter. You may join a walking group, participate in a stationary count, or watch birds from your bird feeder. All count activities must fall within the 24-hour period that comprises your circle's count day. 

Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Bring water, snacks, and any equipment that helps you count birds (binoculars, field guide, etc.). If you don't have equipment, don't worry—many counts have items you can borrow. Beginners are welcome and questions are encouraged. If you have concerns or need more details, your circle leader will be happy to help.
