Bird Conservation Director Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe Honored for Exceptional Environmental Stewardship

STRATFORD, Conn. – Audubon Connecticut congratulates Director of Bird Conservation Corrie Folsom-O'Keefe on being named the 2026 recipient of the Terry Backer Environmental Champion Award, presented by the Stratford Democratic Town Committee.

Named in honor of the late Terry Backer, a longtime environmental advocate and public servant, the award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional environmental stewardship, community leadership, and dedication to protecting Connecticut's natural resources.

Folsom-O'Keefe was recognized for her leadership in protecting birds and the places they need across Stratford, including her work to restore 44 acres of salt marsh and other important coastal habitat at Stratford's Great Meadows Marsh, and leading the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds. She was also recognized for creating the WildLife Guards program, which employs local high school students to support shorebird and seabird conservation during the busy summer months.

This award celebrates individuals who embody Backer’s legacy of environmental stewardship, public service, and deep commitment to community. As Director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Connecticut, Folsom‑O’Keefe has been a steadfast partner in protecting Stratford’s natural assets - including Great Meadows Marsh and the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Her leadership reflects the spirit of service and environmental dedication that Terry Backer championed throughout his life," said Committee Chairwoman Kathleen Callahan. 

"Corrie's been getting her hands dirty for Stratford for years. State-endangered Piping Plovers in our Town are increasing in numbers, thanks to her efforts. In my experience, there are people who lead by walking the walk, and demonstrating for others how to get problems solved, and Corrie personifies that," said Representative Joe Gresko in his introductory speech.

In addition to the award, Folsom-O’Keefe received an Official Citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, a Certificate of Special Recognition from Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Rosa DeLauro, and an Official Statement from Susan Bysiewicz, Lieutenant Governor.
