Ready for spring? As the weather heats up, Florida’s beach-birds begin nesting, incubating their eggs and raising their chicks right on the sand.
Starting March 1 in the Tampa Bay area shorebirds like American Oystercatchers, Wilson’s Plovers, and Snowy Plovers begin to nest and lay their eggs on our beautiful beaches. Moving into April and May, Least Terns and Black Skimmers arrive, courting and looking for just the right place to lay their eggs. These birds need wide open, sandy beaches to nest undisturbed.
How can you help? We’re glad you asked! Share the shore with the birds by giving them space - walk around large flocks of birds. If you come across a posted area, be a good egg by following the rules to stay out of the roped-off areas. Shorebird and seabird eggs are highly camouflaged and could easily be crushed if stepped on.
