119th United States CBC Highest Counts of Individuals

United States Christmas Bird Counts reported 661 species, 62 infraspecific forms, seven count week species, and 44 exotics.  New for the U.S. was a Great Black Hawk at Greater Portland, ME, and a Little Stint in San Diego, CA.  The black hawk was originally found during spring in South Texas and later rediscovered in Maine.

Except for California’s normal dominance of the High Counts, high tallies were more widely spread across the states with 43 having at least one.  California led all states with 138 species, 17 forms, and 17 exotics.   Florida had a great season and came in 2nd with 97 species, six forms, and 18 exotics.  Texas placed 3rd with 87 species, three forms, and five exotics, and was followed by Arizona with 75 species, seven forms and one exotic, Hawai’i with 62 species, six forms and one exotic, Oregon  with 22 species and two forms, Massachusetts with 19 species and two forms, Washington with 19 species, Alaska 18 species and two forms, Louisiana with 18 species and one form, New York with 14 species and two forms.  All other States had less than 13 high counts.

Gainesville, FL, led the Nation for the first time with the highest counts for 17 species.  Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh, TX, was 2nd with 14 species, and Atascosa Highlands, AZ, and Midway Atoll, HI, were 3rd with 12 species and one form.   They were followed by San Diego, CA, and Kendall Area, FL, with 12 species, Sherman Island, CA, with 11 species, Tucson Valley, AZ, Honolulu, HI, and Anzalduas-Bentsen, TX, with 10 species, Volcano, HI, and Harlingen, TX, with nine species, Ramsey Canyon, AZ, Long Pine Key, FL, and North Kona, HI, with eight species, Kapa’a, HI, with seven species and two forms, and Gila River, AZ, and Sequim-Dungeness, WA, with seven species.  All other CBCs had six or fewer high counts.

All-time high counts were made for 43 species/forms this season.  Twenty-one of these exceeded records that were made during the last four seasons which is the norm.  Expanding populations/more experienced surveyors tend to progressively get better/higher.  However, it is rare to break records that were made over 30 years ago and never topped.  Habitat changes/population declines make it difficult to replicate those “Good Old Days”.  Sometimes with increasing numbers of birders, improved technologies, bumper breeding seasons, favorable weather patterns and/or starting new CBCs this occasionally happens. Three 30+ year old records were tied or broken three times this season.  St. George, UT, tied six other counts with one Western Wood-Pewee; three from California and three from Texas.  The last reported was 30-years ago.  The 32 Western Tanagers reported by San Diego, CA, topped the 28 reported by Santa Barbara 34 years ago.  The oldest record to fall was 451 Townsend’s Solitaires reported at Boulder, CO, 41 years ago.  Penrose, CO, had 631 this season.
