United States Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) reported 664 species which included the Red-tailed Tropicbird at HI, Midway Atoll that was new for the CBCs. Eighty-four infraspecific forms (forms), and 31 exotic species (ex) were also reported. Arctic Loon which is under review (NJ, Barnegat) might be an additional species for the season. Rock Ptarmigan (AK, Unalaska Island), White-tailed Ptarmigan (CO, Aspen) Sabine’s Gull (OR, Columbia Estuary), Gray Gull (FL, Sarasota), Boreal Owl (AK, Fairbanks), Gyrfalcon (MO, Confluence and MT, Ninepipe N.W.R.), and Bank Swallow (CA, Salton Sea (south)) were only found during Count Week. Those 7 could have made this an exceptional season.
Only one CBC can have the most species in the country, but many counts can have the highest tally of a species. How many birds does it take to have the highest tally? If the species is rare enough only one. This was done 133 times this season (15%). It takes more individuals as a species becomes more common. Fifteen percent of the highest tallies had 2-9 individuals. Another 15% required 10-49 individuals, 8% required 50-99, 27% required 100-999, and 19% required 1000 – 499,999. Very abundant species might require much more work and planning like counting 502,100 Common Grackles at Oakland City, IN, 540,000 Lesser Scaup at Cocoa, FL, 589,623 Laysan Albatross at Midway Atoll, HI, and 1,500,035 Red-winged Blackbirds at Lake Meredith (east), TX.
This season 47 states and 381 CBCs had the highest count for at least one species. California led all states with high tallies of 138 species, 26 infra specific forms, and 13 exotics. Texas was 2nd with high counts for 104 species, 7 forms and 9 ex. Florida placed 3rd with high counts of 91 species, 2 forms, and 14 ex. These were followed by Arizona with high tallies for 70 species, 4 forms and 1 cw, Hawaii 66 species, 9 forms and 2 ex, Alaska 22 species and 1 form, Washington and Louisiana 17 species, Oregon 14 species and 3 forms, and Massachusetts 14 species and 2 forms. All other states had less than 11 high counts.
Kendall Area (FL) had the highest tally for 24 species in the country. Midway Atoll (HI), followed with 18 species, Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh (TX) 15, San Diego (CA) 14, Monterey Peninsula (CA) and Tucson Valley (AZ) 13. Kaua’i Lihu’e (HI), and Rancho Santa Fe (CA) 11 species. Harlingen (TX) had high counts for 10 species. Highest tallies for 9 species were reported by Guadalupe River Delta-McFaddin Family Ranches (TX), Atascosa Highlands (AZ), Pasadena (CA) and Maui: Haleakala N.P.-Pu’u O Kaka’e (HI). All other CBCs had high counts of 8 species or less.
All-time High Counts were tied or topped for 43 species and infraspecific forms this season. New high counts typically surpass the previous record after a few years. This season we had 5 new records that have stood for at least 37 years. The Anna’s Hummingbird was reported to have 1432 at CA, Santa Barbara CBC during the 89th season. The next highest report was 1962 this season at CA, San Francisco. Sixty-nine Gray Francolins were reported at HI, Maui: Pu’u O Kali during the 80th CBC and this number was repeated this season at HI, Hawai’i: North Kona. Two-hundred-eight Vaux’s Swifts were reported at CA, Oceanside-Vista-Carlsbad during the 80th CBC and this number was finally topped with 230 at CA, Marin County (southern) this season. The 80th season reported another long-standing record when 1058 Pygmy Nuthatches were reported at CA, Monterey Peninsula. They were topped this season with 1210 at CO, Evergreen-Idaho Springs CBC. SC, Charleston’s birders likely did not dream their 3 Louisiana Waterthrushes would stand as a record for 58 years. It will last longer because it was only tied this season.
Highest tallies of species and their forms on CBCs this season can be found below. The number which ties or exceeds all-time high count records from previous years will be in bold font.
