The 115th CBC Summary of Highest Counts of Individual Species for the United States

Birders reported 655 species and 66 infraspecific forms during the 115th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) with six additional species being reported from count week.  Birders continue to show their abilities to find single individuals of species lurking in their count circles.  This season high counts of 57 (9%) species/forms were represented by one individual, and 22 percent of the species by 10 or fewer.

All-time highs were reported for 52 species/infraspecific forms which were almost double the new records from last season.  Forty-three of the new high counts surpassed records that were set in the last 15 years.  The oldest record broken was initially set during the 32nd season when 21 Clapper (light-footed) Rails were reported in San Diego, CA.  San Diego broke its old record with 26.  Another old record was the 350 Piping Plovers at St. Petersburg, FL, during the 52nd season topped this season by 363 at Kenedy County-Wind Turbines, TX.  Kendall Area, FL, tied the 10 Yellow-throated Vireos reported by Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., FL, during the 57th.  Dade County, FL, also tied the one Swainson’s Warbler record initially set by Lower Keys, FL, during the 65th season.  Another outstanding record was the 108 Yellow-throated Warblers reported by Avon Park A.F. Range, FL, which topped the 85 at Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., FL, set during the 67th season.

National Highs were spread across most of the country with at least one being obtained by 44 states and 342 CBCs.  Aside from Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh, TX, being Number One again with highest tallies for 26 species, there was much shuffling in the ranks of other CBCs.  Tucson Valley, AZ, was 2nd with 17 species and two infraspecific forms, Kendall Area, FL, was 3rd with 15 species, O’ahu: Honolulu, HI, was 4th with 13 species and one form, and Atascosa Highlands, AZ, was 5th with 13 species.  San Diego, CA, had 12 species and one form, Midway Atoll & Volcano, HI, each had 11 species and one form, O’ahu: Waipi’o, HI, 10 species and one form, Anzalduas-Bentsen, TX, 10 species, Point Reyes Peninsula & Santa Barbara, CA, had nine each, Green Valley-Madera Canyon & Portal, AZ, Sacramento, CA, and Gainesville & Zellwood-Mount Dora, FL, each had eight species, Kaua’i: Waimea, HI, had seven species and one form, Orange County (coastal), CA, had seven species, Kenedy County-Wind Turbines, TX, had six species and two forms, and Concord, MA, Dade County & Lakelands, FL, and Lacassine N.W.R.-Thornwell, LA, each had six species.  All other CBCs had five or fewer high counts.

California was tops again with the highest tallies for 132 species and seven infraspecific forms.  Texas had 102 species and five forms which was followed closely by Florida with 88 species and two forms.  Arizona had the highest tallies for 79 species and five forms, Hawaii 70 species and seven forms, Alaska 27 species and one form, Louisiana 26 species, Massachusetts 19 species, North Carolina 15 species, and Oregon 11 species and two forms.

Only counts for resident species, infraspecific forms, and exotics that do not have editorial comments questioning the validity of the results were accepted for this report.  High counts for exotics without known established populations will be displayed, but will not be added to results for the CBC or state.  If I make a mistake, please let me know and I will include corrections next year at the end of the column.
