Matt Weldy

Senior Manager, Quantitative Science
About

Matt Weldy is a Senior Manager for Quantitative Science who joined the National Audubon Society during 2026. Matt works on projects leveraging acoustic sampling technologies and machine learning to collect non-invasive monitoring data to better understand species distributions and abundance.

Matt lives in Washington and is currently completing his PhD in Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University, where he also received his MS in Wildlife Science. During his PhD he developed statistical and machine-learning approaches for analyzing applied ecological data, focusing on passive acoustic monitoring, development of acoustic classification tools, and modeling abundance, occupancy, and survival. He has published 23 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 8 federal reports that support conservation and management of northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets, and songbird communities across the Pacific Northwest, USA.

Earlier in his career, Matt worked with diverse organisms, including flying squirrels, elephants, kudu, and aardvarks, and has experience with spatial and remote sensing data.
